Having limped towards the finals the Demons were handed what amounted to a glorified warm-up game to end the Home and Away season, playing against a team who had lost all 17 of its matches so far that year.
With one chance left to redeem themselves and avoid the humiliation of a winless season Hawthorn failed to fire a shot and a 51 point to nil first quarter put the match beyond doubt at the first break, setting the Demons on their way to a huge confidence boosting victory.
The victory could have been even more savage if not for Melbourne experimentation from the second quarter onwards, rotating players through the middle to prepare for the finals series.
Best were Denis Cordner, Dockett and Collins.
