Originally signed by Carlton, Robbie had to delay his league career two years until their hold on him

The wingman played six games in his first two seasons, and nine in the failed 1965 campaign. He injured a knee during the 1966 pre-season and was given an open clearance by the club. He immediately joined in at training with VFA side Williamstown, but both Waverley and two Tasmanian clubs were also interested in his services.

In 1967 Robbie returned to Casterton as coach and won the Hampden League's Best and Fairest that year. Became coach of North Gambier in 1976. He had also coached Latrobe in Tasmania and a club in South Australia.
