Originally signed by Carlton, Robbie had to delay his league career two years until their hold on him expired and he could join Melbourne. The wingman played six games in his first two seasons, and nine in 1965. He injured a knee during the 1966 pre-season and was given an open clearance, immediately training with VFA side Williamstown while also sought by Waverley and two Tasmanian clubs.

In 1967 Robbie returned to Casterton as coach and won the Hampden League's Best and Fairest that year. Became coach of North Gambier in 1976. He had also coached Latrobe in Tasmania and a club in South Australia.
