The younger brother of Jim was the youngest Irish player recruited to a VFL team, arriving in Australia in December 1988. He spent three seasons in the Under 19s and Reserves, playing the last five Seconds games of 1989, as well as following his brother's lead of being loaned to VFA side Prahran.
After around 80 combined games in the club's lower grades, Stynes debuted in the middle of Melbourne's disappointing 1992 season, but only remained in the side for two weeks. He had injury trouble during his career, undergoing five operations in his four years at the club, and was delisted at the end of 1992.
Stynes moved to Port Melbourne in 1993 and played in a Grand Final but also filled in with the Melbourne Reserves. After being linked with Sydney they overlooked him in the National Draft, and unwilling to wait for the pre-season draft Stynes returned to Ireland. He made his senior debut with Dublin in 1994, winning an All-Ireland Final with them the next year, and later playing against against Australia in several International Rules games.
A third brother David played in the Melbourne Reserves during 1997.
