The Demons continued their good form which had registered a first win in two months the previous week for three quarters, before falling in a hole in the last and failing to score as Carlton ran away with victory. Melbourne started well, with Darren Bennett kicking three goals in the first quarter and another in the second. It took a new opponent to quell Bennett, keeping him goalless for the rest of the game. With Michael Pickering also being blanketed Melbourne had no other forwards, but two goals from Andy Lovell in the third quarter left the sides level at three quarter time.

The sides were still locked together 12 minutes into the last term, then after Carlton hit the front they further extended the margin with a controversial free kick to ex-Demon Earl Spalding. Melbourne thought he was holding the ball, but the umpire called a high tackle. The decision broke Melbourne's spirit and the Blues kicked another four goals to win easily. John Northey refused to directly comment, telling journalists "you work your guts out and something like that happens, it deflates you."

Carlton could have sealed the game earlier in the term from three shots on goal in four minutes by Greg Williams but he only managed a total of one point.

It was Melbourne's last scoreless final term until Round 5, 2012.

Best were Schwarz, G. Lovett and B. Lovett.

Rod Grinter was reported for striking Greg Williams in the third quarter and suspended for six matches. Grinter's defence was that he was trying to grab hold of the front of his opponent's jumper and win a free kick for holding the ball.
