Melbourne win by 17 points

Goalkickers - Watson 3, Avery 2, Moodie 2, Mueller 2, Adams 1, Davidson 1

Geelong had the wind in the first quarter, but with a greasy ball they were unable to break through a strong defence. Melbourne forced the play around the railway wing, negating the advantage and limiting Geelong to score behinds at first. The visitors got the first goal, but Melbourne hit back to lead by four points. Geelong kicked two goals into the wind early in the second term, and restricted Melbourne to adding just over a goal to their lead by half time.

Another strong defensive performance stopped Geelong from taking the lead in the third quarter, but a late goal cut the margin to less than one kick. With the wind Melbourne dominated play early in the last quarter, peppering the goals in the opening minutes. Watson missed a golden opportunity by fumbling in front of an open goal but made amends with two goals shortly after. Only stern defence kept them from extending the margin even further.

Best were Streeter, Ogden and Ryan. Ryan suffered back injuries in a collision.
