The Redlegs returned to the MCG for the first time all year, and with three league debutantes in the side recorded their maiden win for the 1932 season. They came up against a side only win game above them, and it was a successful homecoming after three matches at the Motordrome while the MCG was resurfaced.

Neither side kicked accurately, but Melbourne were better in the air and had superior teamwork compared to their opposition.

With the aid of a breeze that blew across the ground but favoured their end, the Reds kicked five goals in the second quarter to take control of the game but when they had their chance the Seasiders took the lead back by a point at the last change of ends.

St Kilda opened the goalkicking in the last quarter and extended their lead, but Margitich replied almost immediately. Warne-Smith then kicked two quick goals before the visitors charged again and stole the lead.

With the two sides locked closely together all day the result was still in doubt in the last few minutes, St Kilda could have extended their lead if Mohr had kicked an easy goal on the run but he missed and Melbourne's pace and forward work helped them put their nose back in front.

Best were Hooper, Beames, and Warne-Smith. Abernethy was 19th man.
