Needing a win to keep themselves right in the hunt for a finals spot, the Redlegs took one of football's greatest hoodoos into their match against the Magpies - not having beaten Collingwood in a home and away match for 12 season and almost pulled off a come from behind victory aided by the Magpies' poor kicking for goal.

It was the first Saturday of the weekend where rain and windy conditions affected play, and the second half was played with continuous rain falling. Melbourne were a better wet weather side at the time, and it helped them compete on an even playing field with their more fancied opponents.

Three goals down at three-quarter time Melbourne grabbed the lead in the last quarter before a lucky snap out of a pack in the last minute won Collingwood the match. Defeat left Melbourne ninth and two games out of the four, while Collingwood climbed to top spot.

Melbourne's best were La Fontaine, Roberts and Young.
