With their season long since wasted, Melbourne travelled to a side with its finals hopes still narrowly alive and threatened to pull off an upset for the first three quarters. With the use of the notorious Western Oval wind they jumped to a 34 point lead at quarter time via direct attacks from the centre. The Bulldogs knew best how to play their own ground and used the same methods to recover in the second term, an eight goal quarter leaving them five points up at the long break.
Facing the wind for a second time, Footscray switched their tactics and slowed Melbourne down by crowding the game. They took the initiative against the wind, opening a three goal lead. The visitors dragged the margin back to four at the last change, but were unlikely to overcome the deficit into the breeze. They did briefly snatch the lead through Hooper, but the recovery was short-lived. Melbourne floundered under Footscray's direct attack, and a defensive blunder between two players unsure as to who would take a mark cost them a vital goal. The Tricolours never looked back, running away to a comfortable win.
Best were Niven, Longhurst and Jones. Conole replaced Robinson (injured shoulder) in the last quarter.
