After playing for eight games for Hawthorn in 1925, Gough joined VFA side Camberwell in 1926 and stayed there for four seasons. After three Reserves games with Richmond in 1928 he went back to Camberwell, before transferring to Melbourne in 1930. He played one game that year and four in the next two. In 1931 he got his chance for four weeks when regular full back Bill Tymms took leave to go on his honeymoon.

Despite playing in pre-season games, Gough applied for a clearance back to Camberwell at the start of 1932. He was denied, and instead ended up back at Hawthorn. After a broken collarbone in his first game back, he was cleared to Prahran midway through 1932. He coached them the next year, before becoming ill in 1934 and passing away late that year.

Notes
Probably the Lew Gough who played for Railways in 1931. May have been captain/coach of Prahran in 1932 as well. Originally from Lascelles, and may have played school football there.
