Wingman Smith spent his first two years at Prahran in the seconds before breaking into the first team permanently in 1926. The next year he won the Recorder Cup for best player in the VFA.
He joined Melbourne in 1931 and spent a year and a half at the Redlegs before returning to Prahran in July 1932. He played 248 games with them until 1940, appeared in their first premiership side in 1937, and was named on the wing on their team of the century.
