Wingman Smith spent his first two years at Prahran in the seconds before breaking into the first team permanently in 1926. The next year he won the Recorder Cup for best player in the VFA.

He joined Melbourne in 1931 and spent a year and a half at the Redlegs before returning to Prahran in July 1932.

In 1937 he played in the first Two Blues premiership side. He played 248 games for Prahran until 1940 and was on the wing of their team of the century.
