Biggest loss at Adelaide Oval
For the second time in three seasons, Melbourne's opponent at the South Australian 'Gather Round' was Essendon, and as in 2023 they were comfortably beaten. This time, defeat dropped them to their first 0-5 start since 2012 and left their season almost over just a few weeks in. Their faltering attack only generated two goals in the first half, leaving them 29 points behind at the long break.
Defender Harrison Petty was sent forward in the third term and kicked the first of four goals in a row to cut the margin to nine points. They were unable to continue the momentum, only adding one of the six goals in the final term. Fines for engaging in a melee/wrestling were handed out to Jack Viney ($1875), Caleb Windsor ($1000) and Trent Rivers ($1000).
Best were Gawn, Pickett, and Petracca. Harry Sharp replaced Jack Henderson in the third quarter.
