With each side down two players courtesy of the Victorian side playing in South Australia on the same day, Melbourne started the second half of the year by eventually running away to an easy win. The Demons were missing Robert B Johnson and Peter Marquis, while North were without Aylett and Doolan but the home team performed better for three quarters before running out of gas.

A faster North were strong in the first quarter, with 10 scoring shots, and even when the lumbering Demons had their chance with the breeze they didn't hit any great heights before two late Ron Barassi goals gave them the lead. The Demons conceded a lead at three quarter time but the breeze allowed them to storm home and earn what in the end was a comfortable victory with their highest score at Arden Street in 15 years.

The victory, and a shock loss by Hawthorn against St Kilda lifted the Demons back to the top of the league ladder.

Best were Brian Dixon, Trevor Johnson and Col Wilson. Adams (flu) was replaced by Thorogood in the selected side. Barassi and Ridley were replaced by Pinfold and Crameri respectively in the last quarter due to cramp.
