The first club to take the same 18 into two consecutive games all season, Melbourne had snatched victory off Footscray in their previous clash, but there was no doubt of the quality of their win the following season. The visitors used their superior speed to carve out a convincing victory.
They opened up a gap at quarter time and held it until the half, but it was the third quarter when Melbourne ran away with the game. Six goals to nil won the match as the match went from being crowded to open and fast.
Melbourne went in with the same team that they had used against Richmond a week earlier, while Footscray made four changes including a late alteration due to an ill-player. They were further hampered by an injury to one of their players which forced him to move from the wing to the forward line where he limped around for the rest of the day.
With the wind in the first quarter Melbourne opened up a three goal lead. Davie got the first and the Reds forced Footscray to defending stoutly in the early minutes. The home side kicked two goals, but conceded five.
The game became crowded in the second term, but with Melbourne strong in the air and in defence they managed to keep Footscray out and instead score their sixth goal. Each side managed two for the quarter before Melbourne blew their opponents away in the third.
Superior speed and teammwork were the difference, Melbourne were fasted to the ball, better in the air and dominant in all departments. Through accurate passing by hand and foot they opened up a match winning lead.
Footscray managed to get Melbourne back under control in the last, and though it was a dull quarter the visitors only managed to add two points to their lead.
Warne-Smith, Johnson and Collins were best.
