A champion track & field athlete and captain of the St Kevin's football side, the father of Geoff and Mike Collins, played just three games in his debut season. 10 games the next year was the start of an extended run in the senior side.
Originally recruited as a half-forward, Collins used his pace to play on the wing. He had his first injury-free year in 1925 and played 19 games. He was a wingman in the 1926 Premiership, before converting to defence later in his career. He played on the half-back flank in the 1928 Semi Final draw but missed most of the replay after being injured early in the game.
Collins played for Victoria B against New South Wales in 1929.
Despite having not played for nearly three years Collins was cleared to Ballarat Imperials as playing coach in April 1934.
