Minor premiership contenders Hawthorn faced a Demons side who had put in their best display of the season a week earlier and struggled to victory, with much of the credit for getting them over the line going to Leigh Matthews.

Matthews booted 7.4 from 34 possessions and was the only reason his side got over the line.

Melbourne were 33 points down five minutes into the last quarter until they kicked three goals in four minutes to tighten the margin. Hawthorn steadied and held on.

Bob Skilton said his side were better than their ladder position indicated and that the new coach would have plenty to work with in 1978.

Best were R. Flower, Grambeau and Denny
