After getting their season back on track a week earlier, the Demons fell to 1-4. They kicked the first goal within a minute, before conceding four of the next five before quarter time. Melbourne had the first of the second quarter, then conceded eight in a row until the end of the third quarter as their structural and defensive frailties were exposed by the Saints for the second year in a row.
A period of domination in the middle of the last quarter when the game was lost generated 2.5, before St Kilda kicked two goals in the last three minutes to further extend their lead.
Best were Salem, Gawn and Hore. Neville Jetta injured his knee.
