In a battle of winless teams, Essendon jumped better. They took advantage of a disorganised Demon defence, and an inability to stop the ball being kicked inside 50 easily, by booting six goals in the first quarter. The Demons had their best patch of the game in the second, when three goals put them in front by seven points at the last change.
The Bombers responded with the first seven goals of the third quarter to take a near unbeatable 33 point lead. Only late strikes through Hunt and Weideman kept the Dees within touching distance. The first goal of the last reduced the margin to less than three goals, before the visitors kicked away again. Two of the last three goals narrowly gave Melbourne the advantage for the term but they were too far behind to seriously challenge and dropped to 0-3.
Best were Gawn, Fritsch and Brayshaw.
