Melbourne's disappointing start to the season continued when they were narrowly pipped by the Seasiders, all but ending their finals hopes with four losses from the first five games.
In a poor quality game which lacked any real energy both teams had their patches of good play throughout the day but were unable to put in a four quarter performance.
Melbourne were attacking in the last quarter but most of their shots in the final term failed to score. They were denied what they thought was a goal late, and which if given would have probably ended the game as a draw.
The Reds were further handicapped by missing Tomkins, George and Wellington through illness or injury but there was good news in the form of Millhouse, voted one of Melbourne's best and finally showing some of the form which had seen him labelled a champion in Adelaide.
Armstrong, Monk and Ellis were prominent in the backline.
The loss left Melbourne above only Richmond on percentage and the winless University. After the game Vin Coutie and Bernie Nolan resigned their positions on the selection committee, reportedly as they believe it was too large.
