Originally signed with Footscray in 1960, but was denied a clearance by Shepparton and decided to remain with the club for two more seasons.
Returning to the league with the Demons he played as a half-forward flanker and had the ability to create scoring opportunities out of nowhere. Skilful and elusive, he was a glorious kick, and after five games in 1962 he became a regular senior player with 18 matches.
1964 saw Vagg kick 22 goals in 20 matches en route to a Grand Final triumph. After kicking three goals in the Semi Final victory over the Magpies, Vagg was held goalless in the big match.
Despite applying for a clearance during 1967, and some suggestion that he was on his way to Carlton, Vagg remained with the club until midway through 1969 when he retired from VFL football. In 1970 he joined Prahran in the VFA but struggled with injury, and after missing most of 1971 with a leg injury he retired.
Vagg then joined Diamond Valley League club Watsonia, coaching the Under 18s for three years and seniors for six seasons from 1982.
