The Demons struggled to break through Adelaide's defence in the first quarter, before three quick goals in the middle of the second term opened a 29 point lead. Two late Crows goals cut the margin to 13, before the lead blew out to 32 points again midway through the third quarter.

The game changed complexion at the start of the last quarter when Adelaide piled on four goals in quick succession to level the scores. Melbourne again seemed to have the game won after another three goals, before Adelaide came again. They cut the margin to four points late in the game, and forced the home side to rush a behind from the next centre bounce. Melbourne held on to win.

Best were Pickett, Viney and Brayshaw. Joel Smith replaced Ben Brown in the last quarter.
