The Demons kept their hopes of a double chance alive by beating wooden spoon contenders Richmond at Waverley in wet, heavy conditions. It was the first time that the two MCG tenants had even been drawn to meet each other at league headquarters.
Melbourne had struggled against lowly sides all year, and after snapping a West Coast home win streak of 15 games the week before they found themselves on the back foot against a struggler again but after a promising start the Tigers kicked just two goals after half time and were beaten comfortably.
It took until the last quarter before the Demons finally kicked away with three goals to nil.
Melbourne won the kick count 42-28, leading Richmond coach Kevin Bartlett to say "we just had too many against us."
Best were Lyon, Tingay and Spalding. Mahoney replaced Bennett in the selected side. Brian Wilson severely ruptured his hamstring and announced his retirement. He would briefly appear for St Kilda in 1991.
