With three games to play, the final five teams had already been decided but Melbourne's trip to Perth would be important in the race for the double chance.
It was the first victory by any travelling side in Perth in 16 matches, and Brian Wilson controversially gestured 'triumphantly' towards the Eagles fans at the final siren after earlier having to be removed from a heated radio interview by Rod Grinter. John Northey and an Eagles trainer were reprimanded by the AFL's Executive Commissioner Alan Schwab for abusing each other at three-quarter time.
Melbourne's midfield pressure had been one of the key factors in the victory, and the centremen were being well-served by ruckman Jim Stynes. They also found Darren Bennett in good touch up forward and he kicked six goals - including four in the first 15 minutes.
Best were Stynes, Yeats and Obst. Greg Healy was reduced to playing one quarter only because of concussion.
