Playing to stay in the race for a double chance, Melbourne played poorly against the bottom placed side, with the four premiership points the only benefit from the day. A tricky wind also affected the moves of both teams, as the coaches continually shuffled players to try and find a winning combination.
It was a poor game all around, with the first goal not coming for 26 minutes. Melbourne's forwards found it difficult to beat the South defenders. The margin was reduced to a point late in the second quarter before goals to Terry Gleeson and Herbie Matthews restored a 14 point lead at the break.
Best were Mann, Dixon and Barassi. Byers replaced Tassie Johnson (fractured cheekbone) at three quarter time.
