The Redlegs went down to another huge loss as they limped towards the end of the season. Despite more than doubling their score in the last quarter they couldn't stop the Maroons kicking away to a big win. They had matched the visitors in most elements of the game, but struggled to get through Fitzroy's defence.

Melbourne kicked the first two goals, before conceding the last four of the opening quarter. Fitzroy then dominated the second term, kicking four goals to nil.

Moriarty of Fitzroy kicked eight goals, in the process breaking the all-time VFL record for goals in a single season up to that point.

Corbett, Chadwick, Wilson and Haines were Melbourne's best.
