Simmonds was tried as an answer to Melbourne's problem with finding a reliable goalkicker. Despite a good reputation in the country he played just four games for four goals before leaving the club.
In 1925 he joined South Ballarat but applied for a permit to play with Wandella during the season.
His uncle Roy Simmonds later trained with Melbourne and played for Hawthorn.

Notes
Some sources spell his surname as Simmons and list him as from Terang. It was previously thought that Simmonds was indigenous, however this has since been proven incorrect.
