The first indigenous player to appear with the club "Nugget" Simmonds was tried as answer to Melbourne's problem with finding a reliable goalkicker.

Despite a good reputation in the country he played just four games for four goals before leaving the club. In 1925 he joined South Ballarat, then played with Murtoa in 1928 and 1929.

Some sources spell his surname as Simmons and list him as from Terang.

There are suggestions that Simmons may not have been an indigenous player, and may have been from the West Indies or similar. He may have also played for Richmond Seconds and Northcote. Though there is some suggestion that there might have been two players of the same name. It is also possible that his official birthdate is incorrect
