Career statistics

A former captain of the Under 16 and Under 18 Victorian Metro sides, Poyas was considered by the Demons before the 2000 National Draft. He was overlooked amid concern from Orthodox Jewish President Joseph Gutnick about a Jewish player appearing in games during the Sabbath. The Demons overlooked Poyas twice, using their picks to select Brad Green and Paul Wheatley. He instead went to Richmond at pick 22, playing nine games across three seasons with the Tigers before being delisted. In his last season there Poyas was joint winner of the 2001 Liston Medal for best player in the VFL.

With Gutnick no longer in charge at Melbourne, Poyas was rookie listed by Melbourne for 2003. He never played a senior game despite finishing third in the Sandringham Best and Fairest. He was delisted and took time away from football, before returning to the Zebras and playing in their 2006 premiership. He was with St Kilda City in the Southern Football League during 2010 and 2011, before joining NEAFL side Broadbeach in 2012.
