In a battle between the league's 16th and 17th placed teams, Melbourne narrowly hung on to retain the higher position. They had the best of the opening three quarters, led by a equal career best six goals from Tom McDonald, but were left with one player on the interchange in the final term due to injuries and had to withstand a storming comeback.
The Blues hit the lead for the first time all day 25 minutes into the last quarter, before Jayden Hunt kicked his side's only goal of the final term from a set shot with two minutes to play. A long distance effort by Mitch Hannan stopped just before the line and was rushed through for a point, leaving Melbourne six points up but having to defend a last kick-in. The Blues went down the other end where a kick from the pocket hit the post with seven seconds to play, allowing Melbourne to hang on and win.
Best were T. McDonald, Oliver and Fritsch. Gawn (ankle) was replaced by Preuss in the selected side. Marty Hore broke his collarbone, Tom McDonald injured the medial ligament in his knee, and Harrison Petty was concussed.
