The Tigers got out to a quick start and had three goals on the board before Melbourne even scored. The first goal, a running effort from the boundary line by Sam Blease, was quickly followed by a Richmond goal and the pattern of the day was set.
Melbourne would win the last three quarters, but never seriously threatened again. Disposal errors and a forward line lacking in targets again cost them, though when they did manage to get the ball forward they were quite potent considering the small amount of inside 50's.
A brief rally in the final term made the game interesting, but Richmond steadied and had a comfortable win despite the Demons more than doubling their score in the last quarter.
Best were Jones, Sylvia and Martin.
Brent Moloney replaced James Magner during the third quarter.
