Charles Baker had Melbourne's first chance of the day in the opening minutes, but hit the post from 20 yards out. West Melbourne went down the other end and scored a behind, but from the kick-in they marked and scored the first goal of the afternoon.

Melbourne botched a number of good chances on goal and went into half-time a goal behind. Sandilands finally made a chance count and got Melbourne's first goal. They spent the next few minutes threatening but couldn't break through again.

Best were Downes, Houston and McKie.
