Touted as a 'project player' when drafted to the last spot on the Melbourne senior list, Martin was a former basketballer whose 2007 season at Sandringham was his first full year of football. Used as a defender in his first season, Martin used his great leap and long arms to play a key role in the backline of the Demons side which won by a point on his debut.

Martin was used as utility in 2009, beginning the season in the backline before being trialled in the ruck and up forward. He kicked six goals for the year, but persistent hip injuries cruelled his 2010 campaign and Martin only managed two games in round 5 and round 6. A late season return through the Casey Demons reserve side failed to win him a recall to the senior side and the injuries eventually finished his season.

Almost on the scrapheap after his disappointing 2010 campaign, Martin took advantage of the league's new Substitute rule to win a place as the Demon's mobile second ruckman and was much improved in playing 21 of 22 games for the year. When Mark Jamar missed six weeks with an injury Martin stepped into the All-Australian's position and made the position his own until Jamar returned.

Injury and an inability to break into the side hurt Martin's 2012 campaign, and he played just seven matches for the season. After playing in Round 1 and Round 3 he wasn't seen in the team again until Round 14, but then played five in a row before a foot injury ended his year.

At the end of the season he was traded to Brisbane for National Draft selections #53 and #73, but he suffered a disappointing first season with the Lions - marred by injury - and after playing the first four games of the season he managed just one more.

Injury and form kept him out of Brisbane's team until the middle of 2014 when a shortage of big men saw him put back into the side, and from there he was one of Brisbane's stars in the second half of the year. In 2015 he was joint winner of Brisbane's Best and Fairest, albeit in a 17th placed season. Martin remained with the Lions until the end of 2020 before joining the Western Bulldogs. He battled injury during the year and was restricted to nine games, playing in the side that lost to Melbourne in the Grand Final.
