Despite coming off two consecutive losses, missing the dangerous Jack McKenzie and Alf George through injury and having to do without Brake who was missing after the death of his father, the Reds all but made sure of their place in the finals with a win over the disappointing Seasiders.
The match was an unusually spiteful one, with wrestling taking place for most of the game and a number of incidents breaking out during the match. Weather also played a role in reducing the quality of the football, with showers and generally unpleasant weather affecting the contest.
The match didn't go all their home side's way, St Kilda scrambled the only goal of the first quarter and Melbourne were poor in attack. After kicking their first goal through a free to Brunier, Melbourne added three more to narrowly lead at half time. St Kilda then made the match interesting by stealing a two goal lead in the third term before a double from Roy Park won back the lead for Melbourne.
The last quarter was the most spiteful of all, starting when Jack Baquie was collected by an opponent in what seemed an accident but Park and Brereton were deliberately assailed during the term.
Bill McKenzie, Evans and Hassett were best.
Reg Gibb was reported for elbowing and Roy Park for striking. Gibb was cleared but Park received a four match ban. The hearing was not held until after Round 16. 108 free kicks were paid for the match.
