A talented all-round sportsman, Doubleday excelled at cricket, football and rowing while studying at Wesley College. He was also known as a talented violinist and was once said to have saved eight people from drowning.
Upon leaving high school, Doubleday moved to Melbourne University to study dentistry. Eligible to play for the University VFL club because of his studies, he played 36 games across three seasons and lost in each of them before the club folded at the end of 1914.
One of the many University players to cross to Melbourne the next year, Doubleday played 17 games in a side which finally played finals again after a long absence but he was once again left without a club when the Fuschias went into recess.
Concentrating on his studies Doubleday worked at the Dental Hospital before enlisting in the army in September 1918. Struck down by Cerebro Spinal Meningitis he died on-board a ship 14 days after it sailed for the Western Front. He was buried at sea in the Indian Ocean.
