George had played for Essendon between 1906 and 1909 before missing the 1910 season. Recruited by Melbourne in 1911 the pacy ruckman who could also play as a defender missed a month early in the season after fracturing fingers in the Round 5 loss to South Melbourne.

He spent two seasons as captain/coach in 1912 and 1913, and despite rumors that he would rejoin Essendon in 1914 he instead coached VFA side North Melbourne.

George returned to Melbourne in 1915, suffering a knee injury in the Round 17, 1915 match against Essendon. He played a fortnight later in the Semi Final against Carlton and injured himself again. The final was his last VFL match and he finished his career with VFA side Prahran.

In January 1917 he joined the AIF Railways Unit and served on the Western Front. He returned to Australia in August 1919 and died in 1946 after a long illness.

In 1914 George was assigned number 31 but did not play any games.
