After a comfortable win over Greater Western Sydney a week earlier the Demons went into the match against the rising Lions with a good record at the Gabba during their recent dark years but were comfortably beaten by a side on the up.
Mark Jamar and Nathan Jones were late withdrawals, replaced by Sam Blease and Jake Spencer - playing his first senior game since Round 14, 2010 and without those two, Mitch Clark or Aaron Davey who they had already lost during the week the Demons were rudderless and despite almost breaking even in clearances and winning the inside 50 count they couldn't kick goals.
Blease started as sub but was called into action five minutes into the first quarter when Tom McDonald was forced out of the game with damage from a marking contest.
After conceding three goals early on the Demons scrapped their way back into the game before two late goals for Jonathan Brown - playing on makeshift full back Jack Watts - gave them a comfortable lead. Lacking any sort of reliable forward target, and with Watts freed up in the backline, the visitors kicked just two points in the second quarter and the game was over.
A belated clutch of late goals made the score respectable but Melbourne were unable to stop the Lions scoring heavily and were deservedly beaten comfortably.
Best were Martin, Watts and Sylvia.
