Melbourne had won just one game at Punt Road since the end of World War I, and their poor record continued. Richmond had 6.8 on the board before Melbourne kicked a goal midway through the second. The Tigers should have had an even bigger lead if they'd kicked straight.
For the second week in a row Melbourne surged in the third quarter, and it was only hard work by the Richmond defenders alongside wasteful kicking by their forwards that kept the Redlegs at arms length going into the final term. The visitors won the last quarter too, but they were too far behind.
The loss left Melbourne in 9th place, a game and percentage out of last.
At the start of the second quarter Bill Tymms noticed that his opponent was unable to tie a stray shoelace due to a heavily bandaged finger and knelt down to tie it for him so play could resume.
