Melbourne's only successes for the season had come against Essendon and Hawthorn, the only two sides who they found themselves above on the ladder at the first bounce. A second win over the 'Same Olds' would all but assure Melbourne of avoiding the wooden spoon, and after a tough struggle they managed it.

Pleasingly it was done without a major contribution from Bob Johnson who had been in spectacular goalkicking form over recent weeks. Margitich, who had been forced to play second fiddle to Johnson, came back into his own and helped carry his side over the line.

Best were Sambell, Niven and Long.

With four games to play Melbourne were now clear of the bottom by two.
