After throwing away a near certain victory the week before, Melbourne gave no such favours to Richmond on a wet, heavy ground which was in terrible condition.
Richmond got the opening goal, but their following attacks were easily turned back by the home defence. Melbourne missed several chances, before Coutie finally registered the only goal of the quarter. The game turned after the break, where Melbourne's lighter players dominated the visiting big men, who were handicapped by the heavy turf. Richmond were disorganised, allowing four goals to nil before half time.
Once the game was lost, Richmond players turned to violence, causing the game to descend into a serious of rough, violent skirmishes. The umpire attempted to take control by paying free kicks and reporting four Richmond players, but he couldn't stop the match turning nasty at the end.
Despite a brief rally by Richmond at the start of the third quarter they were well beaten.
Best were Robertson, Monk and Flintoft. Cowell was injured by a kick to the groin and Robertson injured his ankle.
In the investigation into the violent incidents, Richmond's Mahoney was accused of striking Purse but the Melbourne player suggested that while he had been struck it was by a different Richmond player who he couldn't identify and Mahoney was cleared.
