Melbourne's loss to Essendon the previous Saturday had ruined their chances of playing in the finals unless they could kick a record score to bridge the percentage gap, but it was all academic as the Dons won anyway - and the defending premiers missed out on the top four.

With the use of a strong breeze Melbourne made the most of their chances in the first and third quarters, while Hawthorn hurt their chances by kicking 1.6 in the second term.

Reserve players Lock and Carlon replaced Toyne (injured) in the third quarter, and Rodda (injured) in the last quarter respectively.
