As the merger controversy continued the Demons responded with their second straight victory. Despite seemingly having the game in their keeping several times the Demons let Fremantle back into the game, and when the Dockers kicked the first goal of the last quarter to draw within seven points a comeback was looming.

Melbourne took the hint and made their comeback, peppering the Fremantle defence for ten minutes before finally breaking through with a Jeff Farmer goal before Anthony Ingerson marked and goaled to seal the result just a minute later.

Best were Ingerson, Tingay and G. Lovett. Ingerson was reported for striking and suspended for two matches.
