Defender and ruckman and Collingwood premiership player in 1902, Leach was cleared to Melbourne in May 1904. After one season with the Redlegs he joined Richmond in the VFA, playing in a premiership in 1905 and remaining there until the end of 1907.

Leach applied for a clearance back to Melbourne at the start of 1907 but it was refused by the VFL because the permit committee decided that the inducement of an MCC membership for playing for the MFC was too great to make it a legitimate transfer.. He returned in 1909 and added a further nine games.

His brothers Arthur and Fred also played for the Magpies.
