A solid defender who was used in various positions around the backline and quickly became a vital member of the Melbourne backline. He was restricted to 13 games in his second season by a series of ankle injuries, as well as being bitten by a horse while at work. In the 1939 pre-season he needed a tetanus injection after the nails of a boot stop punctured his skin.
Lock missed the 1939 premiership after being reported in the Semi Final, then injured himself in the 1940 Preliminary Final. He finally won a flag at full back in 1941 before enlisting in the army during 1942 and stepping out of VFL football while he served with the 15 Field Ambulance.
Returning to the club in 1946, Lock moved to a half-back flank and played 15 games for the season. In 1947 he played 18 matches and was named in the Sporting Life "Team of the Year". That year he won the Best and Fairest.
Lock managed another 18 games in 1948, but missed his third premiership after suffering an injured knee in the 1948 Semi Final loss to Essendon. Though it was initially feared that his career was over, and Lock announced he would be retiring, he returned late in 1949 for four games. He retired for good after the injury failed to respond to treatment in the 1950 pre-season.
Lock was named on the interchange bench of the MFC team of the century.
He was also a talented all-round cricketer.
