After a cagey start the Demons kicked away to a 22 point lead at quarter time, extending the gap beyond 30 in the second term before Richmond launched a fightback. The margin was level at half time, and the Tigers kicked away to be four goals in front in the last quarter before a late Melbourne charge. The Demons got to within six points but couldn't find another goal to equalise, and the Tigers finished the game on a counter-attacking breakaway.
Best were Oliver, Brayshaw and Salem. Garlett injured his shoulder.
