In wet conditions Richmond dominated and should have won by more, but after a hard week where they had been thrashed by Carlton and beaten by Glenelg in a mid-week night match, they were happy to take four points.

Unable to adapt to the wet conditions the Demons stayed within striking distance until the last quarter but never deserved to get close, let alone win. Ex-Tiger Laurie Fowler was one of few shining lights and was named best afield in a back pocket and in the centre. Smith, Hardeman, Wells and Alves all battled hard but there weren't enough contributors.

Recruits like Craig McKellar and Allan Davis who had been feted as masterful signings after round 1 were now being questioned, and like much of the 70's the forward line was struggling for potency.

Best were Fowler, S. Smith and Alves. Johnston was replaced in the selected side by Lyons, he then became a reserve and replaced Lyons during the last quarter. Dullard was replaced by Giampaolo. Coles bruised his shoulder.
