On the coolest Darwin day in years, 80mm of rain fell and kept scoring low. The locals got off to a fast start - including a goal to ex-Demon Fabian Francis, and led at three quarter time after kicking the only goal of the quarter. They failed to score in the last term, allowing Melbourne to run away with the game. They took the lead back with a David Neitz snap, before Adrian Campbell goalled from a 50 metre penalty. Neitz got another, before Sean Charles capped off a day where he won the Australia Day Council Medal for best on ground with the last goal.
Melbourne were without a number of first choice players, including Jim Stynes, Greg Healy, Glenn Lovett, Andrew Obst, Brett Lovett, Graeme Yeats, Todd Viney, Sean Wight, Michael Pickering and Paul Bryce.
Best were Charles, Lovell, and S. Febey. Future Demon Scott Chisholm was named best for the NTFL.
Notes
Other players likely included Phil Gilbert, Jason Norrish, Glenn Molloy and Martin Pike
