Campbell initially declined offers from Footscray to try out for the senior list, but after winning a premiership with Traralgon in 1987 he joined the Bulldogs, playing 30 games over five seasons. His most productive year was 1989, playing 14 games and kicking 21 goals to lead his side. He played just eight games in his last three years, affected by a serious knee injury in a Reserves final. He missed all of 1991 and was cleared to the Demons at the end of 1992.

Campbell didn't play until the last two games of 1993 season, kicking five goals in his only senior appearances. Remained on the list in 1994 but did not play seniors again, missing most of the year after a serious ankle injury, and was delisted at the end of the season. He was invited to pre-season at Fitzroy with a view to them selecting him in the pre-season draft but he wasn't picked.

Played for Leongatha in 2001 and was later an assistant coach at Wantirna. Coached Leongatha in 2010 and 2011.

Campbell's daughter Campbell was Melbourne's first father/daughter pick before the 2022 AFLW summer season, debuting later that year.
