Taken in the 1991 draft after playing in a Claremont premiership side, Norrish remained in the WAFL for a season before crossing to Melbourne in 1993. After just five games that year he played 15 in 1994. Out of contract, he was picked for the new Fremantle side by old coach Gerard Neesham. Melbourne received a draft pick as exchange, using it to select Donald Cockatoo-Collins, but complained that the $20,000 financial compensation didn't cover the estimated $45,000 they'd spent recruiting him.

Norrish won Fremantle's Best and Fairest in 1998 and was vice-captain from 1999-2001 as well as playing one state game for Western Australia. He retired at the end of 2002, playing one last season with Claremont before giving up the game for good. Norrish returned to Hale as coach in 2012 where he remained through 2015.
