Originally drafted as a rookie by Geelong in 2002, Byrnes made his debut in 2004 and was a fringe player with the Cats for most of his time at the club - playing just two full seasons and an average of 12 games a year but appearing in two premierships.

He played in nine matches over his last two seasons with the Cats before leaving the club as an unrestricted free agent at the end of 2012. He became Melbourne's first ever selection under the new free agency rules and played 17 games in his first year at the club before a foot injury in Round 21 sidelined him for the last two games.

After just six games in 2014 he was sidelined for a month with an ankle injury, and early in his comeback for the Casey Demons in a VFL game he suffered a foot injury which ended his season. Byrnes retired on 30 July 2014 before being named a playing assistant coach of the Scorpions for 2015 as well as Melbourne's Welfare and Development coach.

Played for Deer Park in 2016
