The Demons won their third game in a row in a tight, controversial and often spiteful clash at Princes Park.
Marcus Seecamp and Brad Pearce were reported for striking each other after the quarter time siren. Pearce gave the defender a short one to the ribs, and Seecamp punched him in the head. He got three weeks and Pearce one.
In a poor quality game David Neitz and David Schwarz proved the difference by providing dangerous forward targets, Schwarz kicking 2.2 in a few minutes in the second quarter but when Melbourne lost Neitz with a broken ankle and Jim Stynes with a broken hand which would ultimately see his consecutive game streak stopped at 244, Carlton lifted, jjumping to a three goal lead seven minutes into the last quarter.
A James McDonald goal levelled the scores with six minutes left, despite questions about whether or not it had gone through the big sticks. Two behinds put Melbourne in front before first gamer Nathan Brown won a crucial ball in the Carlton forward line. Carlton continued to attack for the last two minutes before Melbourne broke free and got the ball at their end. A dual between Craig Smoker and Ron De Iulio saw the ball bounce of the Carlton player's foot and out of bounds, running down the clock long enough to secure victory.
Best were Andrew Leoncelli, Steven Febey and Adem Yze were amongst the best. Brown was impressive in a gutsy debut but wouldn't play another game until 2000 due to injuries.
