After unsuccessfully trying to appoint Percy Wilson of Collingwood as captain/coach a year earlier, they got their man and after one season in charge Gerald Brosnan became Supervisor of Umpires for the VFL. After falling apart in the second half of 1920, Wilson's side started the year badly before recovering to finish two games outside the top four. The season started against the backdrop of off-field turmoil, with two factions vying for control of the club. The incumbent committee was challenged by a reform group of HD Westley, C. Finlay, K. Batten, C. Brady, H. Ritchie and GH Watson, with a G. Strickland as an independent candidate. Andrew Manzie and Bill McClelland were Melbourne's delegates to the league.

St Kilda protested the Round 5 draw, claiming Melbourne had incorrectly been given a point but the result stood.

Melbourne was scheduled to play a game in Colac during July but pulled out in the week of the game.

This was the first season where scores from other grounds were displayed, with codes to decipher the scores available in the Football Record.

A player's cricket team began play in the Metropolitan League competition over the 1921/1922 summer.
